What is foster-to-adopt?

We’re all about finding the right home for the right cat — we want both you and your fluffy friend to be happy it’s a match. So rather than expecting you to meet them once or twice in a shelter environment and commit on the spot, we offer foster-to-adopt, which basically just means taking them home to see how it goes before you complete the adoption.

It’s sort of like renting before you buy, but without the horrible landlords and endless paperwork.

How foster-to-adopt works

We always invite people to come and meet any cats they’re interested in, either at Moggy Manor or a fosterer’s home. But even if you meet them multiple times, you might not get a good picture of the cat’s personality, for various reasons — some cats are much shyer in a multi-cat environment, or they might be feeling scared by the new person in their room, for instance. Plus who really shows their full, fabulous personality to someone they’ve just met?

Realistically, you won’t know for sure whether a cat is right for you (and your home, family, and other pets) until they’ve lived with you for a while and fully relaxed. So that’s exactly what foster-to-adopt is: you take the cat home under a fostering agreement until you’re certain they’re the cat for you.

It takes different cats different amounts of time to relax and show their personalities, so we allow up to six months to decide if you’d like to proceed to adoption.

Here’s the process:

  1. Choose a kitty
  2. Send us your home check video (more info on that here)
  3. Meet the cat (if you do your video before the meeting, you can take them home the same day!)
  4. Sign our fostering agreement, promising to take good care of the cat while they’re with you, and send a donation to help us continue our work. Our suggested amount is £150 (a lot less than we typically spend on each cat!), usually as one £75 donation when you take the kitty home and another when you complete the adoption.
  5. Take them home and give them lots of love
  6. When you’re sure it’s a good match, proceed to full adoption, signing our adoption agreement and donating the other £75.
  7. We transfer the microchip into your name, and your kitty is officially yours!

If you have any questions about foster-to-adopt or any of the steps, send us a message and Holly will reply (probably at 4am with a kitten on her chest).
